THINKING ABOUT MEDIA ACESS

MEDIA ACCESs

Access to technologies that allowed me to create media content were always around me growing up, without me even consciously knowing or applying it. Computer and televisions growing up allowed for me to access internet and mass media content, to learn from it, to be what the definition first defined as access, I was a consumer, a receiver, a speculator, but never a producer. In middle school, I got a camera and started to feel that it was my chance to put my own media content out there. Like any other middle schooler, I mimicked what others did and posted online, just knowing that I had better media technology to produce the video, or image, but never pushing it beyond the norm. In high school, I still knew I had these technologies at the tips of the fingers, but no one was there to explain to me Adobe Photoshop, or Lightroom, or Garage Band, or iMovie. This is where I find that I failed myself. Instead of picking up these software’s and learning them myself, I ignored the privilege of the simple access I had to them. Access that many would never be able to have. Going forward I couldn’t help but think that many people who may have a story to tell, or a skill to share through media, or the interest to have the internet and learn online, are still unable to access technologies to engage these digital, technological, and media platforms due to the consumer quality that is the pretence to usage and production of media content. to usage and production of media content.

I would say we see this changing in schools as computers are available for students to use if they please. But I found that technology such as cameras or advanced media producing technologies and software’s were not readily available, talked about, or accessible in schools that weren’t ‘higher education’, i.e. college and beyond. And although I feel that I have access to such technologies in high school and now, I rarely have the time beyond classes to explore those possibilities. So, to me, accessibility to the time it takes to learn, master, and effectively produce media content is what has limited in my own access to media production content. Being said, this access is one that I can manage, manipulate, and change. I can make time to sit down and learn these software’s and master the technologies I have been privileged to have, and to put my media knowledge and creativity to use; to formulate new ideas in content, and through this, improve my own access, or opportunity and ability to media production.
